The Goose in Surrey Heath

The evening started out great; we'd reserved a table a few days before for an 18th birthday meal, and, because a few members of our party were not yet 18, asked for the drinking policy. The restaurant kindly put two tables together for our party so we could be sat together, and we sat down and ordered meals and drinks to accompany said meals, as the law allows for 16/17 year old's to drink cider/beer/etc. with a meal provided they're with someone 18+. Everyone at the table ordering alcoholic drinks was asked to provide ID, as expected, which we did. The staff were knowledgeable about those who were 17 drinking as they had checked our IDs, which each of us had. We were asked to present our ID again just so the manager could approve the sale and check, which they did. We were given our drinks a few moments later and all was fine. About 10-15 mins later, our meals started arriving, which is when things took a turn. As the food was being brought out, a security guard for the pub who was on duty came to the table. He asked each one of us for ID, again, even those who were not drinking anything alcoholic (and therefore had no ID as they did not expect to be ID checked - the security guard was unreasonable and made a girl in our party feel very uncomfortable regardless) and after checking who was under 18 and drinking, those of us who were 17 put our hands up but mentioned the point that we'd been ID twice and the sale had been approved by both our server and the manager. He argued the point and said that we could not drink because we were not of legal age (despite what the law clearly states "For someone over 18 to buy a child over 16 beer, wine or cider if they are eating a table meal together in licensed premises.") and subsequently confiscated our drinks. We were understandably confused. ID had been checked, the sale was approved, and it was within the law. We were honest. A few of us went up to order non-alcoholic drinks such as water and Pepsi, and a member of our party also went up and talked to a member of the bar staff. They mentioned what I have mentioned above (the check when booking the table, the ID checks at the table, etc.) and the bar staff then changed their minds and disagreed. Again, this confused us - why permit the sale of alcohol, only to change your mind? The guy at the bar went and got who we assumed was the manager who had argued with our party at the same point as the guy before. We asked for a refund of our drinks as we believed what had happened was unfair; they refused. We ordered replacement non-alcoholic drinks, and sat and ate what we could have of our meals (which weren't very good and weren't enjoyable because of the stressful atmosphere at the table). We discussed what had happened, and ultimately decided to kindly ask again for a refund of the drinks we did not get to, by law, enjoy. Our table was cleared by a member of the bar staff who was nice and asked for our version of events and said he would see what he could do. After a discussion with bar staff an agreement was reached an £40 was taken off the meal. We appreciated this, but were still not happy with the level of service received. Regardless of the events that happened, the food wasn't great. It was cold and to a low standard and, as mentioned previously, even less enjoyable because of the level of service we received.Edit: I am unable to reply to the response to my comments, so I will add them here: You were still knowledgeable of there being 17 year old's drinking. This was within the law, which is why those who are under 18 asked for drinks! If you have such a strict policy, why wasn't this enforced at the beginning? "we require proof that they are over the age of 18 before alcohol will be served" - one of your team confirmed I personally was 17, and then served me? Also, when you mention the proxy serve, this was not as you explained. The person who was 17 ordering the drink went with an 18 year old as the law requires someone 18+ to be in attendance. You handed the drink over, having previously checked ID...

Great pub with lovely staff. Excellent food and reasonably priced. If you are ever in the area check it out. I definitely will be going again.

Had dinner here with my mate, and service food and drink were wonderful! Was served by Jordan and he was super lovely :) My mate is about to under go an operation so we were having one last blow out and had a great time! Highly recommend the Notorious P.I.G burger!!! Thanks DOY!!

I had a wonderful time here over the weekend. There was one bartender who stood out above the rest with his tattoos and dreamy eyes. Can’t wait to go again just to see big Rhys.

Went in earlier this week and had a wonderful time with the Mrs. Great food and cheap drinks the Mrs really enjoyed the eye candy of the barman Rhys as well.

Had a nice evening with great food and drink! Especially fond of the tattooed guy at the bar, great laugh and cracking jokes all night #eyecandy
