The Old Mill Tea Room in Tonbridge and Malling

After taking my daughter for a haircut at Q salon I thought I’d pop in with my children for tea and cake. My children are 12, 8, 6 and 3 and quietly sat at the table in a corner as we were instructed to. My children were actually whispering because the place had all the atmosphere (and ambience) of the local library. That’s fine I thought as I encourage my children to sit and talk quietly and politely when out. All started ok, I was handed a menu and began deciding what to have. There was only one other person dining there and several tables which had reserved on them. After less than a minute a rather sour lady came to take our order. As you can imagine it takes a little while to decide and after several seconds this seemed to irk her somewhat. Lord knows why as the place was empty so it’s not as if I was keeping her from anything. I asked for squash and she snapped at me that she’d “already told me once they don’t have squash to drink” I must have not heard her the first time she’d said it but wow just wow what a rude way to speak to a customer. The lady had a mask on but as she huffed and puffed, rolled her eyes and tapped her foot as I tried to order I got the distinct impression that we weren’t welcome in this establishment. I can understand if my children were being loud or running about but we were just trying to order rather quickly as she’d stomped over and I don’t think she seemed keen to give me a few more minutes. I don’t think this is a place that welcomes ANY children no matter how well behaved.As you can see on the reviews it indicates that children are welcome. I can categorically say they are NOT and that is fine but please change the bio. There are plenty of places for families to eat in west malling where they are welcome and I would thoroughly recommend trying anywhere but the old mill tea room.If you are elderly and like to dine in somewhere with all the atmosphere of the local morgue then rock on 🤘 you’ll love it.

Ordered 4 sultana scones and then 2 cinnamon scones, they gave us 2 sultana scones, and 1 plain scone which when we then enquired about not receiving the right scones, the woman told us she only had 2 fruit scones and then told us that the plain one we got wasn’t plain because they don’t do plain, but it had no fruit so we just settled in the end. The woman seemed to get really confused from the small walk between our table and the kitchen. There was only our table and 1 other table in there so not even like they were busy to get confused with a large volume of orders. Seemed to get very confused very easily. Not very impressed. Haven’t been here in years due to our last experience not being very good and won’t be back in a hurry. Would not recommend.

Nice old fashioned atmosphere. A change from the run of the mill large brand coffee cafés. Basic rolls and wraps and some nice cakes. Generous coffee portion. Nice old mill building and an assortment of local vendors in the courtyard.

We came across this tea room quite by accident but what a find! Delicious home cooked soup, tempting cakes and hand crafted chocolate gifts. Linen table cloths and fresh flowers also added to the charm. Reasonable prices too. Well worth the 35 minute drive. Visited 10/12/19

My sister and I went in at lunchtime expecting to struggle to get a seat but empty! We sat alone for the whole time and can understand why! A virtually uncooked jacket potato with tiny bit of cheese, very mean and two slices of very dry cake!! My carrot cake had a very odd tasting topping and the victoria sponge was just dry and old I think. The tea was nice but very odd experience

Brilliant place run by two really lovely ladies. Home made cakes are delicious and great choice every time we visit. I recommend the plum and almond!

This charming little tea room is now under new management and being run by the lovely Vee and Susan. It has been spruced up and is a cosy space to have a spot of lunch and a piece of cake. Everything is homemade and very tasty! And apparently they will start doing afternoon teas in the new year, so I will have to stop by again to try those out!Susan is also a chocolatier and has some of her chocolates on sales here. And they are delicious!!

Under new ownership. Superb coffee in copious quantities. Any thing they make involving chocolate is rich,decadent,and superb. They coped with my crowd of damp,Lycraclad eternal school boys. Wonderful we shall return.

Quiet little place, that's why I decided to eat there. I was the youngest customer, so I think this tearoom is mainly for older people. There is no music, so it's good place to have a chat. The design is old fashionable, again I think this probably attracts the clientele I mentioned above.The food was nice. Simple jacket potato, nicely served on a plate.The tearoom was operated by one lady only, she takes orders and prepares the food.Everything was ok for me.

Wanted to try a proper tea room rather than the normal coffee chains. We were greeted by a grumpy moody lady who took a instant disliking to us cause we were under 60 (the average age of the rest of the customers ) coffee was weak and tastes like dish water. Really not impressed will defiantly be sticking to Costa next time
