The Hand & Sceptre in Tunbridge Wells

Booked for me by my work. I always give 5stars.A reasonable room in a pub. Fairly clean. Comfortable bed. The bathroom was a bit tired and needed a lick of paint. Didn't have breakfast so I am unable to comment on it.Important context: My experience was a 1 night stay and does not represent this establishment in it's entirety. No-one in hospitality sets out to provide a poor experience. Anyone can have an off day.

Had lunch which was really good. Had drinks on patio, lovely. Staff behind bar up until 7 were great.I did however ask specifically what time kitchen closed and was told 8.30 p.m.At 8 went to order pizzas as one person had one in the afternoon.We were told the kitchen was closed. We were told no pizza on a Sunday even though one of our party had one earlier.I asked why all the confusion and what was I supposed to do for food considering we didn't have transportation. I was told sorry but nothing could be done.We ate tesco's.The rooms are sadly looking dingy. We stayed there 3 years ago and the rooms were in much better condition then. I couldn't take a shower because of mold in shower and mo light.On Monday morning however, we met such a lovely man who does jobs at the hotel and he kindly took us to Tunbridge wells for our car hire.Hope I have been honest enough

Our first visit on Sunday for a drink was fine, we decided to return this evening for a meal. What a mistake, sat amongst four dirty tables whilst bar staff stood behind the bar literally sorting their hair out and talking. Decided not to eat or even order a drink as cleanliness should be top priority. Would not recommend nor will we return.

Came here for a meal with my boyfriend and absolutely loved it! All the staff were very friendly and polite, particularly the female manager, who was lovely to talk to when she came over to see how we were doing :)The food was delicious and had a good variety to choose from (which as a vegan, doesn't happen a lot). I will definitely be coming back again!

Tried this pub after hearing some recommendations and it didn’t disappoint! The staff were all friendly and attentive, it was a lovely environment, and the female manager was really helpful and welcoming. The food was delicious! All of the menu sounded great so we can’t wait to go back to try more. Great visit all round and definitely our new go-to place

Absolutely lovely environment to be around. The staff are sweet, hardworking and a real treat. The food was glorious and the room services were even better.Would definitely recommend this lovely hotel. Whether you're bringing your kids, a significant other or simply by yourself.

We ordered food here on a Sunday night, through their own website, paying £60 for 4 meals, we ordered at 4:30 for a 7:30 pickup. Great, we thought, all sorted, no fuss. 7:30 rolls around we walk in and let the member of staff know we are pickup an order we placed on their website. We were met with a "deer stuck in headlights" look as the staff member realised that they had not in fact received our order and that we were about to be very disappointed. Another staff member steps in to tell us "We don't even do roast dinners past 5" as if that was our fault that the website allowed us to order that meal. We then stood there looking at each other like a bunch of lemmings whilst their minds ticked over thinking about what could possibly be done. "We can do just the burger" one of them unhelpfully remarked. Because yes, one meal out of 4 is exactly what we want. "Can you just refund us?" My friend asked...... "I don't know" was the response from the blatantly under trained teenager. It wasn't her fault by any stretch and we were very sympathetic that the system had let us down. We reassured her we weren't upset, but we just wanted either 4 meals or our money back. Bring in the manager. 10 minutes later, stinking of cigarettes, appeared a young man who looked like he'd just arisen from the world's best nap. "What's up?" He jabbed. "You've charged us £60 and not made any food"...... "Oh yeah deliveroo has been messing up..." He retorted smugly. Passing the blame on to someone else, bullet dodged. "Well actually we ordered it from your website, 3 hours ago". "Oh. Well. Right."......*cue awkward staring* "Can you just refund us please so we can go somewhere else and get our food?".... "Yeah yeah, *other staff member* can you ring this through". Cue another awkward minute as creepy manager stands very close behind young girl trying to earn a few quid at the weekend, showing her how to use the POS system to do a refund. "Right, put your card in." "Right, take you card out". "Very sorry about all this..." Nothing more, a veiled attempt at an apology as we beeline for the door, with a slightly lower than expected refund, because the prices are different on the website compared to in the restaurant itself.I'm not from the area, I was visiting friends. But even if I lived in the hotel itself I'd never go back here. Avoid like the plague.

a bad experience. everything took forever. from the initial drinks to the dessert.starters eventually arrived, passable but not great.mains,hells teeth,where to begin. lukewarm turkey dinner. roast potatoes like rocks,struggled to cut them. turkey awful, veggies cold and uninspiring.dessert average and microwaved to within a inch of death.Staff slow, disinterested and nowhere to be seen.just don't if you value your dining experience

A clean plate and a full belly!Just had a great roast beef perfectly cooked and I asked for extra crispy roast pots and it was no problem so tasty as you can see the plate is empty if I had room I’d be going back for seconds!Great meal thank you chef

Very nice pub with that countryside feel to it. Superb vegan menu (which are hard to come by) and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Would highly recommend and next time I'm in the area it will be on my to do list. Recommend the vegan spicy coconut curry... Was dreamy!!
