"The Empire Café is Newbury's longest established bakery and café. Making fresh bread and cakes on the premises and serving food and drinks all day. We are famous for our Lardy cakes across the world. We excel at celebration cakes, be they wedding cakes, birthday cakes or just for the family they can be decorated just for you and can include photos from your family album!"

What I'd call a great experience; lovely traditional café with a deceptively big menu, home cooked food to order at good prices. Who could resist taking home a cheeky cake afterwards? Especially fond of the almond biscuits and danishes. A great place in Newbury for anybody, and Wendy the owner is such a lovely person to add. I'd recommend to anybody who likes good food and good customer service.

Brilliant breakfast, could not fault the friendly customer service and couldn't resist taking a loaf of lardy bread home afterwards

Always loved this place. Make a point of visiting every time I'm in Newbury. Doesn't seem to have changed in 40 years. Decent food, good teas and reasonable prices.

Excellent old world bakery with all the favourites old and new. Great bread as well. Do support this local institution.

Just nowhere else like it. A wonderful variety of bread, cakes and savouries as well as a comprehensive menu of British breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas, all baked and cooked fresh on the premises. Great service and a lovely traditional setting. Celebration cakes baked and decorated to order are second to none and the traditional lardy cakes are another speciality of the bakery. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Wendy and her team. An integral part of Newbury and a tremendous asset to the town.

Basic poor quality good, the bakery and cakes are not what they used to be. Lardy cake used to be something just to come to Newbury for but not anymore it’s awful as our the loads and current buns. Iced coffee is not iced coffee it is coffee syrup with milk (not even that cold). If you like an outdated cafe which hasn’t been updated in 100yrs and food quality is not important to you then give it a try. I know this place is ok for pensioners and problem who have been loyal customers for many years but I wouldn’t eat here again. Suspect this is why customer numbers have dropped and not to do with road works outside

A traditional craft bakery and cafe . I had a lovely fish and chip lunch with proper bread and butter and peas. Very friendly staff. Deserves more people to go along. Note closed for holidays 9th to 24th June 2019. I would recommend their lardy cake a local delicacy!

Excellent traditional bakery and tea rooms where a wideamenu of hot and cold food is served - and its good. Superb selection of bread, cakes and pastries available in the shop area. Their tea cakes and almond macaroons are really worth seeking out.
