Splendid evening at the hotel. Check in was simple and well organised. Service in the restaurant was first class, the waiter was very quick and extremely helpful. An asset to the hotel. The food was first class considering we were a group of fourteen. Only one item slightly, "over". The team at checkout were very helpful and professional and knowledgeable about the local area. We will be back, but fewer at a time... Thank you.

Booked a meeting room here for 4 of us and it was excellent. Far from the corporate feel of so many hotels, we had a lovely sunny room and were well looked after by delightful staff. Easy to get to from the M4, free parking for hotel guests, we've already booked our next meeting there and are looking forward to it.

What a lovely place to sit for drinks. A little expensive but a great experience beautiful period hotel very comfy seats huge garden with covered seating. Staff are attentive. Spotless tables / bathrooms etc. Didn't get chance to eat here but they did a moving mountains burger. Good selection or beers and lagers and a nice cider.

Very nice friendly hotel, great hardworking staff. Good food, a bit chaotic at breakfast, but to be expected with a full house. All in all a lovely comfortable stay and a good night's sleep.

We held a Christmas party here and, oh what a great experience. The hotel has been refurbished and looks new again! Perfect for weddings, wakes and Christening parties and at under £50 a head for full dinner, coffees, teas, snacks and water and lemonade on all tables. Brilliant staff and service. Highly recommended!

The hotel was excellent value for money. A big, clean room for me and my Dad, for a two nights stay. A nice bar with a great selection of drinks. Staff very pleasant throughout the hotel. And to top it off, the self service breakfast was fantastic. I’ll stay here again.

We enjoyed a lovely stay at The Chequers Hotel. An old building full of character in the heart of Newbury. Plenty of parking with clear signage to entrance and exits etc .We had a warm greetings by the receptionist who helped to carry our luggage to our room that was on the second floor as they do not have a lift. We had chosen to upgrade our room and had a very spacious room overlooking the main road. The bed was so comfortable being very large and plenty of pillows. The room also had a settee with plenty of storage space, a coffee maker plus a kettle and bottled water along with very luxury biscuits. The ensuite provided a clean bath with shower over and sink plus toilet with lovely luxury towels.Throughout the hotel there were lots of seating areas and dining areas to enjoy. We were attending a reunion and the service could not have been better .Each table had a dedicated member of staff to serve and clear the dishes etc.The food was delicious and there was a member if staff to attend to drinks. They were very unobtrusive, polite and efficient at all times.Breakfast was a buffet affair with full English available along with plenty of choice for a continental .Again all staff friendly and efficient.Being an old character building the only slight criticism would be the outside window frames that were in need of painting or replacement. However, very enjoyable stay.

Staff helpful and understanding, food and bar excellent, only downfall moisture build up within the room no ventilation cold damp beds, bathroom window screwed down. Mold and black damp patch's on wall near bed. Hotel staff aware of the situation as they stated they had similar issue within their working areas. I was advised this would be taken to the manager and sincere apologies given but no manager addressed any issues before checkout or offer of a different room.

This was going to be a 4.5 star review, but my wife persuaded me to round up the number of stars. We booked late through Booking.com (the hotel website booking system was going to charge us 40% extra for the same deal) for a single night for the two of us.On arrival the staff were very friendly and quickly found our booking. We were given a courtyard room, which had been recently refurbished and which was very clean and well furnished (including an iron & ironing board). The bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows. The shower was above the bath, which might not suit some people. There was parking almost outside the door - you had to register your registration number with Reception, after which you had 24 hours free parking. We didn't eat in the hotel because we were so close to the town centre that we took advantage of the more highly rated restaurants and bars.So the niggles: the main one was the lack of soundproofing between the floors which meant that we knew exactly where the guy above us was walking (it must have been a man from the sounds he made). Fortunately he was alone and didn't use the TV. During the night someone arrived, revving their car engine and waking us up. Around 6.30 in the morning a party of people left, again noisily.Oh and the back of the bathroom door had been forgotten by the decorator. However the friendliness of the staff, the free parking and the location, overcame all else and we would recommend this hotel.
