Chequers Smoke House in West Oxfordshire

Was honestly the best meal out I've had in Oxfordshire. We drove an hour to eat here and it was definitely worth it. My husband and i shared a big smoke platter and couldn't even finish it. Will definitely be going again!

Very disappointed with the evening. To start with, we booked a table for 2 the previous evening and when we arrived, it had not been scheduled in and it seemed that they were unprepared for us. When we were seated, we were given the menus - which is fine - and they walked off to give us time. We chose what we wanted (a beef and a chicken burger) to find out they were out of beef burgers. Rather than sitting us down and telling us from the beginning, they let us choose before telling us they were out of certain ingredients. So we chose something else and waited for the food. When the food arrived, which was in a good amount of time, the slaw was missing from the meal with no explanation as to why. No offer of swapping it for something else, no offer of a reduced price, no apologies. We used to love the venue when it was the chequers further up the road, but the atmosphere of this new establishment wasn't great and the food isn't what it used to be. I ordered the beef chilli which was so bland, the taste was of a watery tomato sauce with a little spice and jalapenos. The "nachos" were misleading and not great and what made the food even less palatable was listening to the bar staff kissing. The food didn't taste nice to begin with, but that definitely put the sour in the sour cream. The reason it wasn't a 1* is because the staff were lovely, maybe not so professional, but they were nice, I would say that and how quickly we received our food was the only redeeming factors. Before lockdown, we were avid customers and loved to come here on a date night to treat ourselves. But as this new establishment, unless the food improves, I don't think I will personally be returning.

Had dinner here, and I must say…the food was really tasty. Had the spicy chicken wings with blue cheese dip and OMG wow 🤩, my mate had had macaroni n cheese and as you can see it really looks good. For our mains The Ribs was juicy and the Brisket just melted in my mouth. Very tasty indeed and I would definitely like to revisit the place again.

Me and my fiance went here for our valentines day meal early. We weren't disappointed we had starters I had the salt and pepper squid which was delicious and my fiance had the nachos with the optional extra of chilli which was fantastic the nachos were homemade and not just from the shop like every other restaurant we have visited. For main we had the big smoke share platter that was honestly huge we upgraded to dirty fries and they were out of this world I highly recommend them they are slightly spicy though but not too hot. The meat on the platter is all cooked to perfection and so juicy and succulent with home made coleslaw me and my fiance are big eaters and we struggled however the staff were so lovely and let us have a take away container to take our left overs home. My fiance wanted to try the deserts as soon as she heard the cheesecake of the day was jammie dodger and white chocolate cheesecake which portion size was larger then your average restaurant the cheesecake was light and fluffy definitely homemade or very good quality. I could not manage a dessert so I went for a milkshake which was also a very nice size and delicious. The staff were amazing throughout the meal and even after the meal they wasn't in a rush to get us out the door they waited for us to ask for the bill before they brought it over told us to take our time before heading out into the cold it was wonderful to not be rushed, the tables were spotless, the establishment was clean and had a good atmosphere. We will definitely be returning with friends. Honestly I can't recommend this place enough. Sorry about the long review but I wanted to make sure I got all the information in and especially when I receive a service and meal as good as this one I like to make sure everybody gets credit for their hard work. Fantastic family meal here yesterday for a party of nine people from age 2 to 68. Great food selection. Brilliant service from very attentive staff. No delays, no mistakes. Would highly recommend.

The Red Lion was just OK, the service was OK food came quite quickly but it was average at best, this might be about what I like so you will need to check it out. I did see the burger go by to other customers, they did look good

I was picking my son up from Witney after his year placement there from Uni, so... as a last goodbye to Witney I took him to the Red Lion Smokehouse for a meal.We both had the Pulled Pork Burger and OMG... it was delicious, even the chips that came with them were gorgeous.The manager was polite, cheerful and helpful. I wish her luck.The only little thing that I might wonder about is the will it be a wee bit to expensive for the people of Witney.Let's hope not.

Good food and good list of milkshakes. The brisket was a bit tough but the pulled pork burnt ends and ribs where very good. Going to try the sausage next time.

One of the best BBQ houses in Oxfordshire!Great menu selection with lots of options all served in healthy potions.Very clean with great service.Always look out for specials on the menu or on social media.
