Where is The King Alfred?

"The King Alfred is a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet only a 10 minute walk from the high street and the iconic Winchester Cathedral. Cosy corners, freshly cooked classic pub food, real ales and an interesting wine list all served by our friendly team who love being here as much as you will. Upstairs we have five characterful letting bedrooms, each stylishly decorated in keeping with the traditional, eclectic style downstairs."

Fantastic classic style pub. Very family friendly. Service was prompt, informative and kind, we had a Sunday roast that was sublime. Arrived at 12:00 midday, and it wasn’t too busy either. Lovely pub.

Good food, nice atmosphere and very clean. Hostess was a bit abrupt which was a shame and affected the overall rating. Going by food alone, would say 5*.

Popped in here for the first time on Saturday. Had heard about it but never been. What a lovely pub! Beautiful decor inside and a real nice atmosphere and great beer. Really friendly lady behind the bar too she was very welcoming. I will definitely return.

What a fantastic pub. Amazing and unusual decor. We had the Sunday roast which was delicious with an absolutely enormous Yorkshire pudding. Really attentive and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend.

My first visit to the UK outside of London (during Covid 2021). I agree with the other reviews, rooms simple…. But comfortable and what I expected. It was a stressful time due to Omicron and protocol changes but the staff were so so helpful and understanding. I loved the food, bar, proximity to the city center, helpfulness of everyone. Don’t know what is around and beyond Winchester but I definitely will be back. Thank you for making my stay so welcoming.

We stayed here for 3 nights, but could have stayed a week! Beautifully comfy beds, spotlessly clean bathroom and loved the Continental breakfast especially the homemade breakfast muffins! The food here is incredible, something for everyone and all served by amazingly friendly staff. From front of house staff, bar staff and Holly who looked after the rooms, all gave us fantastic service. Thankyou, and we can't wait to return.

Delightful pub. Delicious menu. We ordered two different starters so that we could taste each others. We both had venison stew with herby dumplings which was scrummy. Then we shared a dessert of a poached pear. Cosy atmosphere and nicely attentive staff.

This is a really great place to stay - quite a surprise. Like many, I gather, I almost didn't book as there was no cooked breakfast, which is always a benefit of staying away. However the alternative was stunning. Lovely granola, amazing muffins and a real teapot. And a fridge with some real milk!I really enjoyed my stay. Easy and comfortable. Highly recommended.

Super friendly staff, nice beer, good lunchtime meal (venison stew). No pies to choose from as delivery hadn't arrived. Plenty of space around us, high ceilings etc, felt as safe as one can in covid times. Booked table on line, no problems.

Service was a little slow but it was a busy Saturday so understandable. The food was decent enough although one of our party was unhappy with the soufflé. The response from the waitress was positive and a free drink was also offered. Overall we really enjoyed it.
