The St James Tavern in Winchester

A group of us, adults kids and dogs, came to SJT for a roast dinner. The staff were lovely, the beer selection was great and the food was fantastic. Roast dinner was substantial. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious.We've already said that we'll be going back in the very near future.Certainly the best roast I've had out in a long while

Great little pub this one, we actually went for the whisky tasting upstairs but had a drink before & after. Great selection on offer, plenty of seating (you might not think so from the outside!) and friendly staff. A recommended visit!

I had a group functions with finger food here recently and it was so great! Ben and Beth took such great care from planning all the way through to the evening itself. Great food and great service - highly recommend!

Not sure why every pub "The Small pub" group takes over tends to turn into an expensive "eatery", and when it doesnt work for them they just move on and leave a collapsed business!. Sjt is expensive , roasts gone from £12 to £17, beer £5.50 average, thats if your lucky to find the chef in house and not on a birthday/weekend away or the staff struggling to cope with demand! Locals frowned upon asking for another drink as staff prefer to look at laptops facing the wall away from the bar. Small toilets, dingy corners and old decor. Locally try the Fulflood Arms for real beer, The Railway inn for real music, the Jolly Farmer for meal value or city center for authentic service. Closed on mondays and lunchtimes during week, no parking and due to health and safety reasons no candles or real fires. Apart from that, if you like Rick Astley as background music and falling over black labradors spralled all over the floor pop in.👍🏾

Staff really friendly and helpful. I couldn’t say my food was that great..I had fish and chips and the chips were nice but the fish kind of looked like the ones you get out the frozen isle and put them in the oven at home. Maybe I was unlucky as other dishes looked nice

Attended with a group of works colleagues for the Christmas meal. What was served up was a complete disgrace for £30 a head I would have had expected a hearty 3 courses not second world war ration portions. Plus the staff were more interested in talking to each than providing us with their services. Bearing in mind other than two other customers and our group of 10 the pub was empty. Comes to something when spoons would had be a better option.

At the “top of the town” but still only minutes from the station or the town centre on foot, this is a wonderful pub, with great decors and a snug, cosy atmosphere.It has four of Wadworth’s finest and a guest ale on offer, each of which were kept and drank superbly.A good selection of wine by the glass as well, the Chardonnay and French Rose were excellent value.The Christmas food was outstanding, very good quality produce, beautifully cooked, and flawlessly presented.Beth, our hostess, made everything easy, from sorting dietary needs at the time of booking to managing a split bill at the end.I would have no hesitation visiting again, it would not need to be for an occasion!

St James is a cosy pub, with very friendly staff. And the food is fabulous (and reasonably priced). I just had the sausages (pork and sweet potatoes today) with mash and greens, which was all very tasty, even the greens which I’m not usually a fan of. Followed by a nice, light apple crumble. Yum.

Excellent pub with a few ales on tap. Staff very friendly and helpful. Clean and bright interior, well worth a visit.

Seating area was comfortable and enough space relax.This is a place that I would return back to if in Winchester or the local area again.Short uphill walk away from the train station and military museum, but worth the walk!
