The Bell @ Skenfrith in Monmouthshire

It is set in an amazing location, we didn't actually venture in as we were on a rambling excursion, but having seen the photos, I would definitely think about staying in this hotel if we are in the area again.

We spent a weekend there for a friend's wedding. The place is really nice in a fantastic location, and our room was incredible.It's pricey though, so be prepared. We had dinner and were really surprised. From our personal point of view, the quality of the food does not justify those prices. In fact, we wouldn't eat there again. It's not worth it.Finally, and although we understand they're short of staff, the service is quite frankly not very welcoming or at the level you expect from a place like that, and it's the main reason we give it 3 stars: The reception is normally empty. Difficult to find anyone there. You ask for a cab and they tell you to check it online. They come to ask if we're ready to order during breakfast, we say we need more time and the woman looks at the ceiling and turns around without saying anything (That was awkward).Overall, a very good place to stay, but we'd say that if you want to charge that money you need to offer a bit more.

Set across a quiet road from the Monnow River in pretty countryside this well furnished 11 bedroom, hotel restaurant is a delight. Our small group stayed for 3 nights and dined in each night. The rooms are well appointed, clean and comfortable. Extra touches like fresh milk, real coffee and home made biscuits in the rooms suggest a thoughtfulness that extends throughout the hotel. Food is of a high standard and the staff (special mention to Maria and Kat and the lady at breakfast) are efficient and pleasant. Breakfast is only served from 9am which is late for me but you can always walk down to the church, castle and river to help build up your appetite.

We went to the Bell for dinner as we were close and in Skenfrith for the day. Booked via mail with Maria which was great. Food was lovely and portions well sized, but a little on the expensive side. Overall lovely place. Would have given 4 stars, but we felt a little rushed as the courses came very close to each other. We had some nibbles to start and before we had got half way through our starters were called. Then again straight after this our mains. Again lovely food, but perhaps ask if we are ready for next course or give more of a gap.

Such a shame that you weren't open for drinks in your beer garden at 17:30 today. Last time we were staying in the village we had some drinks and nibbles in your lovely, sunny garden. After walking from the caravan site it was such a disappointment to find you were closed and would only be open for drinks from 18:30 both Friday and Saturday, and only for a couple of hours, on such a lovely weekend. Is this something that will remain in place as isn't it a great shame to alienate walkers, cyclists and visitors to the area?(In reply to the owner's response)Yes, you were given a star marking and feedback based on someone's experience. That's kind of how this works. Most of your ratings and reviews are based on opinions of whether someone got what they wanted or not, so I'm not sure what your point is with that.Hope your staffing issues can be resolved soon as it was a lovely place to visit on a sunny afternoon when we were here last year.

Had dinner here. Warm welcome and atmosphere, excellent service and good menu. The portions were generous and well presented. Fillet steak was splendid. Only small criticism is that the fish dishes were a little overcooked and the dauphinoise potatoes were undercooked. If you like chocolate, the delice was heavenly!!

Looked forward to eating a Sunday lunch with friends due to the reviews. However the experience left a lot to be desired. Roast beef was tough. Service noteable by its absence. No one took the time to ask if the meal was to our satisfaction. When we had the audacity to point out that half the beef was inedible due to being so tough, it was pointed out that it was gristle! The owner/manageress added that no one else had complained and we should have said as we would have been given more. Quite why I would want more of the same is beyond me. The rest of the meal was average and at £24 per course you’re setting a high bar when it comes to quality and service which was sorely lacking in this case.No apology given, in fact you were left with the impression of how dare you criticise the food.We were compensated by having the DISCRETIONARY service charge removed!Won’t return.

Been there many times. Very well presented, excellent service and interesting food at reasonable prices. Plenty of outside dining too. Highly recommended

Not usually one to write reviews, but having read the below petty 1 star over a cup of coffee( which is only based on personal taste)I feel I must share MY view!We spent 3 days at The Bell- the rooms are beautiful, the food is first class and most importantly the staff is wonderful! I feel like a rating of 5 is not enough to express how rare it is to find such place!By the way coffee was excellent in my opinion!

Lovely, spacious rooms, very good food and terrific service made for a great visit. We stayed three nights between Xmas and NY. Hotel manager Maria seemed omnipresent, due to reduced staff numbers. She and her team did a wonderful job. All were very kind to our pooch, too.
