The Priory Hotel & Restaurant in Newport

Took friends here for lunch, the whole meal from starters, mains & desserts was delicious. Staff so friendly and the service was great. 4th visit for us and will definitely return

The hotel is generally good and the staff were polite and helpful but the restaurant is very poor with food that is cooked without an ounce of care. I strongly recommend you eat elsewhere.

Restaurant was full, so I suggest you book in advance.Lovely old building and ideal setting for a restaurant.We had scallops from the starters menu and had the Sunday roast. Both the beef and chicken lunches were delicious with a nice selection of vegetables.All the staff were very friendly and I will be returning in the future.

A splendid characterful place ( the chimneys alone are spectacular) the bar is excellent and it is situated perfectly to explore what is left of a Roman town including the remains of a small amphitheatre.

Nice enough good. Mushroom stare was chewy, lamb main was perfectly cooked and tasty. Service was good although a steak kniife would have been nice. A pasable experience but better places available for the money.

Tasty food but unfortunately the attitude of the manager towards myself as a vegan was truly shocking. She had a ‘don’t care attitude’ which is appalling and because of that I won’t be dining there again. All I asked was that the menu was clearly labelled but it seems that this was too much for her.

I have been going to The Priory on and off for close to 20 years and the food has always been top notch. However, my wife, some friends and I went just after Christmas and were appalled at just how far the standards have dropped. The once famous garlic bread was inedible. The bread itself was fine, but it now comes with a garlic paste on the side which was positively disgusting. My four crevettes that were no bigger than supermarket king prawns were overcooked and cost £12. They mixed up my steak and insisted that I had ordered sirloin when in fact I had ordered rib eye. When I got my steak it was unseasoned. For dessert my wife and I had the cheesecake which was also inedible as it was claggy and oily. My friend’s steak had also been over cooked. The service itself was also bad and we had expressed our concern with the food throughout. When we received the bill it was over £300 and they had included a £35 service charge. We argued that the service and the food had been awful and we are always happy to leave generous tips, but in this case it was not deserved. They countered that we had not complained about the food which was completely false. I lived for years in London and I am used to paying over the odds for a meal and more than happy to do so if it is good. However, this is the first time that I feel properly ripped off. I will never go back, nor shall I recommend it to anyone. In fact I will probably deter them. If you want the same style of food but of a far higher quality, I recommend The Miskin Arms and The Ceasar’s Arms.

This is one of my favourite places to eat in the world, the staff are great, food is very well presented behind a glass cabinet for your selection and when it comes out it tastes divine

Had a lovely stay on 4th Dec. Room nice and clean and warm. Lovely breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Plenty of parking. Gorgeous toiletries in room. Deli shop was fab. Would love to return. Also lots of interest in local area.

Our second visit to the Priory (we stayed for a few days before - and 'excellent), but this was the first time in the Restaurant; for a very special Birthday. We were very well looked after by the fab staff and I can honestly say this was one of the very best meals I've enjoyed anywhere in the world! OK it's not cheap but it IS great value 👍 we'll be back soon, THANK YOU 😊
