We spent with our dog a few days there and had a very good experience.PLACE: it is tidy and clean. Dedicated to Allan Ramsay, a famous Scottish character, the hotel is a bit like a museum, great idea!FOOD: we were actually pleasantly surprised, the food was well above what you would expect in a pub, a well deserved 5 star just for it.SERVICE: really friendly staff, they made us feel comfy and welcome at all times.FOR HIKERS: right outside the hotel, you have access to the Pentland National park hills. It's kind of hidden though, so check on google map the "River North Esk" behind the hotel, the access to the park is there.

We arrived to check in. No one was there. We called and emailed, no response. We called Booking. Com who responded promptly as they could not get a response either so they refunded us. We learnt whilst we were there that this had happened on more than one occasion. We were from Lancashire so completely stranded. Appalling Service they need to stop taking bookings.

Stopped for a drink and first choice (cider) not available so opted for lager which we ended up leaving unfinished as it was too warm to be considered enjoyable so unfortunately a disappointing experience.

Accommodation very disappointing. A great shame really as a few small changes and attention to detail would make a lot of difference, I would then stay again. The room was dusty & teeming with cobwebs and spiders. There were holes in the ceiling where a lot of attempts had been made to place an aerial cable for the tv, which was barely managing to stay on the wall. A radiator was hanging off the wall only held on by the pipes. Wallpaper hanging off the wall and ceiling, holes everywhere filled in with tissues in various places, and sash windows which were draughty, one of them had no way of securing it closed. The final downer was woodlice, yes woodlice! under the bed and bedside unit. I can usually get past most issues provided a place is clean, but I only stayed the one night and didn't sleep a wink. The plus side for this place is that the food is bloody great, and the staff friendly, although the branded beer & lager choice on tap is limited unless you're a real ale buff. Video and pictures were taken.

Historic, traditional, attractive and well run inn with helpful staff.Stopped for coffee and went back for tea after our walk in the beautiful Pentland hills. Additional seating outside. Will return and recommended.

This place has been part of my life for many years. Used to take girlfriend's out for a drive then a meal. It's a good place to start and end many a walking day in the hills or on the gentle flats and visiting the post glacial features nearby and exploring the history of local witch scene and Jenny Barry and her cave.

Was staying locally but not in the hotel stopped off for a drink only to be told they were closed to residents only. This despite bars and restaurants being open now after Covid-19 lockdown. Their current Google status was open.Strange as the bar was empty and they have outside space and you would have thought appreciate some passing trade. If you are reading this in 2020 and not a resident be warned.

Love this place! Beautiful traditional pub with lots of interesting info inside and a bar top covered with old pennies. Best pub to come into after a windy walk in the pentlands! Totally recommend the sticky toffee pudding! And the bus back to Edinburgh leaves from pretty much right outside the door. Perfect!

This small hotel in Carlops is also a mini museum dedicated to the works of Allan Ramsay, a Scottish pioneer in playwright and literature, who was brought up in the area.As soon as you go in, you are greeted by extremely welcoming, friendly, helpful and informative staff who will go out their way to help you whatever your enquiry may be.We stayed for two nights. On the first night we had a three course meal. The service wasn't the quickest, but all courses are made from scratch using locally sourced ingredients. The steak pie was especially good. The room was ok. Clean enough and tidy, but there was some crumbs and a stray ear plug on the floor. The bed was also a queen size, a little small for our liking but comfortable enough and we slept well. It would also be beneficial to have a long mirror in the room but we got a big mirror on request. One of the gents who works the front of house and the dog friendly bar, Kenny, was an absolute gent, very helpful and friendly.Overall, a pleasant stay in beautiful part of the countryside, and I would stay here again if I had to.

Best food we ate in Scotland! The food takes long to be prepared but it's delicious and so worth it! The staff is very polite too making the whole experience great. Definitely recommend it!
