The Restaurant at the Salutation Inn in Exeter

By far the best restaurant is Topsham and the surrounding area. Michelin star quality food in a relaxed setting with very attentive but unobtrusive service. Perfect for a special occasion

Just a one night stay but we were so well looked after. Room immaculate and service first class. If you stsy opt for the breakfast!

Took a friend to dinner to celebrate his birthday. We all had a six-course dinner with different variations but all had cheese instead of dessert. Excellent service from knowledgeable staff, providing helpful advice on dishes and some wine (thanks, Stephen!) for each. Table service outstanding and attentive without being intrusive. Food perfect, of course! Not cheap by any means but perfect for a special occasion.UPDATE (March 2022): still as great as ever! Six course tasting menu for four of us, celebrating my parents' 65th wedding anniversary. Couldn't have been better. Wonderful dishes and superb service. Must be considered as the premium dining venue in Devon. Photos from this visit where we enjoyed the vegetarian tasting menu.

Atrium dining with decor/ambience more akin to a Holiday Inn than a upmarket dining experience - pretty odd. Food very upscale but needed a more refined table service. dishes need to be described when they are placed in the table, we were often calling staff to check what we had on the plate exactly.

My boyfriend and I came here for a birthday meal at the weekend. Our whole experience was 5*. Staff were so lovely and attentive, the food was fantastic and I can't recommend Salutation Inn enough. We both had the 6 course tasting menu with wine pairing - a delicious selection of nearly everything off the menu, with an additional dish for my boyfriends birthday. Can't wait to come back here, a great choice for a special occasion.

The staff is friendly and welcoming but the food was ok. My daughter had the fish and chips from the child menu and the fish was soaking in oil and the fries were dry.

My partner and I chose to spend my birthday here enjoying a lovely meal and drinks. We were looked after by lovely people and enjoyed our evening very much. We look forward to returning in the future 😊

We had the tasting menu and first off I must say that the service was excellent. Such lovely and attentive (but not overly-attentive) staff. Food was very good although perhaps the goats cheese mouse could have been lighter. Excellent beef. Decor for such a historic pub was a bit disappointing, particularly in the hotel lounge which is modern and plain. And it’s quite dear, although we didn’t mind the price.

Wonderful friendly service, and delicious afternoon tea. Sat outside in the sunshine. The lovely waitress put our home made cream cakes in the fridge until we needed to eat them so they didn't melt. Would thoroughly recommend the Salutation.
