Malt Shovel Inn in Forest of Dean

We booked here and arrived in good time we were told it was an 5pm for book in . 630 we were still sat in the car park.I rang them 13 times and. Got. No. Reply.I knocked the. Doors. No reply.The place. Looked dingy with a collection of vehicles and scrap in the car park.So we were stranded after a long day hiking. Ignored in a car park next to a dark pub for 2 hours in total while we found somewhere else to sleep for the night.We booked online through hotel. Com luckily they found us somewhere. Else to stay.Really not the best experience . 😔

Lovely inn. Great polite barman and only thing was it was very cold. Thoroughly enjoyed it otherwise. Would go again definitely

Arrived late and parked in the scrapyard provided, between the abandoned cars and washing machine, to be led to our filthy dirty room. Tea and coffee facilities were a kettle and some milk, no tea or coffee!The room was dirty, stained carpets, and the bath had a slimey rubber mat in it that was hiding all the chipped enamel. Had we wanted to risk using it there was no hot water anyway.We were told breakfast was between 7.30am and 9.30 am, so headed down just before 9 to find it deserted and in darkness with no staff. So went back to our room and returned after hearing another couple heading that way.No drinks other than a coffee machine in the corner, I had to get a drink out the car from the previous eve. So, a guy comes in says to us and the other couple full English and leaves. We then waited 25 minutes for our freezing cold full English minus bacon, to which we could only eat the slice of cold toast. Still no mention of drinks, all this to a back drop of ozzy Osborne blasting out from the kitchen. He then drove off leaving us alone.Had been due to stay that evening as well, but not a chance in hell, packed and left.Ps ladies, mirror in the bathroom and no sockets obviously, one socket by the bed, no mirror, you will have no use for a hairdryer!AVOID AVOID AVOID!

Good friendly pub food very good quality and prices

Great place to stay if you want admire Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty . The staff made us feel very welcomed and Adam and his team were great hosts .

This is one of the oldest Inns in England (0910 I think). Full of character and quirks. Had I one night stay and a meal which was excellent and great value for money. Our room was clean and tidy and the staff look after you well. Beers and Ales tasted good. The car park is a bit of a scrap yard with many rusting relics, but somehow just adds to the character to the place.

We had Sunday roast today at the Malt Shovel. It was a fantastic meal, very generous and absolutely delicious. The service was great and very friendly. We would highly recommendthis place for a happy outing.Wendy & Clive

It was like something out of a horror movie, the car park was a scrapyard of disused cars. My husband walked in and the pub fell silent and it seemed non locals weren't particularly welcomed. The staircase up to our room was full of stuff animals absolutely thick with dust and then we had to walk through a bizarre mirrored corridor. The room was filthy and we actually played a game of Noughts & Crosses on the mirror to draw their attention to how thick the dust was. Despite it being late in the evening, we refused to stay. Avoid it !

Probably the worst accommodation I've stayed at in thirty years; just inept.The drawer liners are news pages from 1966, probably the last time any maintenance or cleaning happened.The room was filthy, most of the electricals didn't work. The main wardrobe nearly fell on us when we opened it and the landlord admitted it did the same to him a few days before!Hot water in the sink was a dribble. Hot water in the shower ran cold very quickly.A fellow guest tripped on the landing steps as there was no lighting.Our room looked out over the landlords patio and a delightful accumulation of two weeks worth of dog poo. Don't open the window.Breakfast service was non existent. The coffee maker sat in a semi-dismantled heap in the corner.

We only stayed for one night but wanted to stay for more; what an incredibly charming little place - 12th Century with exposed stone and original beams in the heart of beautiful countryside. Large and comfy room. The staff went above and beyond and even gave us a lift in the morning. I was very impressed and look forward to staying again.
