The Fountain Inn Gastro Pub in Mendip

Friendly and great place to eat, full of character. Excellent food. Great place to meet up with friends or family as we did.

Shame the description of the food on the menu didn’t live up to expectations. We chose the Fountain Inn over other restaurants in Wells because of it‘s locally sourced ingredients, but were disappointed. We chose the beer battered haddock, which was certainly not as described. Our fisherman-friend thought it looked as if it had been frozen. Pity, as the chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce were good. Our starters were the mezze, which was supposed to come with focaccia - this was substituted with a couple of small slices of white, albeit homemade, bread. My husband asked for an additional portion of „crusty“ bread, which was certainly not crusty, just toasted. Our dessert was sorbet, again slightly disappointing considering the price, as it was full of ice crystals. It was a very quiet evening, with just a handful of customers. The young waiter was charming and chatty, but that didn’t make up for the slightly disappointing food.

First time to visit here & entered with some trepidation, but have to say one of the best venues in Wells. Sunday lunch fabulous full of flavour, good sized portions. Service & presentation really good,.

The downstairs in the restaurant was buzzing. Really Christmasy and a lovely atmosphere. Unfortunately we were taken upstairs where we felt a bit forgotten. We had to cancel the main meal in the end as it was getting on for 9pm (table booked for 7.30) and didn't fancy our Xmas dinner and pud at gone 10pm. They didn't charge us for the starter which went some way. But it was our Xmas dinner which we were really looking forward to. I think they've changed hands as always had good experience before. Shame as we would have booked elsewhere in hindsight.

Lovely ambience, excellent food, friendly staff, had a very good evening.

Managed to secure a last minute booking here. Attentive service throughout, delicious food and a good drinks menu. The restaurant is also tastefully decorated. The price was reasonable, and three courses plus drinks was around £38 per head.Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Wells.Sorry for the lack of photos, we ended up quite tipsy and so they're all of us pulling stupid faces 😁

Quite disappointed with our experience at highly recommended Fountain…staff varied from friendly enough but very inexperienced or completely over the top to be almost embarrassing. Wrong starter served to one of us leaving one to eat while the other waited….considering there were only three tables of diners excessive wait between starter and main course. Staff generally inattentive. The food is ok but nothing to rave about. Maybe we picked a bad night

Went in for a much needed drink with my fellow stressed out Mum's. Although we didn't eat, we were greeted warmly and given a lovely sofa to sit on and recommended a lovely bottle of red. The wine was lovely, the ambience relaxed and friendly and the food......looked and smelled wonderful, we will be back to eat!

Absolutely fantastic pub serving delicious food. Best meal of our trip to Wells, I would come back here again and recommend to anyone visiting the city. Definitely book ahead. The calamari was cooked to perfection, and the lasagne is genuinely one of the best I've ever eaten. Save room for pudding - the Eton mess and chocolate fondant are to die for! Brilliant service and friendly attitude from the staff. So pleased we came here.
