Booked single room only with no breakfast or dinner. Had a nice afternoon tea though.Friendly and professional staff with front of house manager, Stephen, being particularly good.Wished I could have stayed longer.Liked fact I could have small single ensuite room, ideal for sole traveller. Will definitely book again and spend more time fishing/exploring

We've just had an overnight Travelzoo stay with Bob the dog at The Fox and Hounds, Chulmleigh. What a great place. The hotel is 3 star and doesn't pretend to be anything more, but the grounds are lovely, free parking and our room was large and spotlessly clean, breakfast was plentiful and the afternoon tea was really quite special, fabulous cakes. Special mention must go to Maddy on reception. She is great. Welcoming, efficient and a real asset. Hold on to that one .... What totally surprised us and was definitely the wow factor was the delightful River Taw just at the end of the hotel garden. We had a beautiful walk in the meadow and by the river. Location wise, there is a choice of forests within just 5 minutes drive. Bob was really happy. Just an overnight break, but we feel totally recharged

Lovely location, lovely staff and lovely food! I was looked after very well by Tom, who was extremely helpful and professional! I never managed to get a photo of my room, but they are really nice and well equipped with everything you need really. Matt and Helen the owners were very down to earth and accomodating. I also heard there is a beautiful tree house here?? The photos of it look incredible! I can't wait to come back next time with the wife and kids. The grounds out the back provide a nice walk. I must say though, upon leaving the property it's very difficult to turn left onto the main road and I feel this may be slightly dangerous as it is such a sharp turn.

Just come back from afternoon tea here, was our first time but definitely not our last. Beautiful place in beautiful surroundings, Dog friendly so if you are out for a walk and feeling hungry the afternoon tea is lovely and plenty of it. Rooms are dog friendly too so looking forward to trying them out on our next visit. Thanks to Stephen who served us and Matt the owner both of whom made our visit so enjoyable . Would definitely recommend a visit

Excellent stay, everything about the hotel was perfect. Our room no 23 is very beautiful, it is so bright and airy with a very comfy bed and amazing bathroom. Although it says it’s a cosy double it’s a lovely size and not small like we thought it was going to be . It’s so peaceful here with lovely walks on the doorstep. The bar and dining area is excellent with a great big log burner you really couldn’t wish for anything more . This hotel is so welcoming and homely from the moment you step inside the door . The staff are amazing and nothing is too much trouble, I don’t think I have ever stayed anywhere where the staff are all so attentive and friendly. The food you could not fault from the breakfast to evening dining , absolutely fabulous meals . Anyone who stays here should have the afternoon tea , it’s the best we have ever had . Special thanks to Tom who is excellent at his job and very informative about the surrounding area for sightseeing, the owners of the hotel are very lucky to have him . There is something very special about this hotel it is a true gem and I am so glad that we have been allowed to stay in your beautiful hotel , glad we still have another couple of days left before we have to check out . The only downside to it is that we have to leave it , it’s a little bit of luxury to where we will be definitely returning

Fantastic evening dinner. Booked table a few days before and asked if the chef would be flexible on a vegetarian dish.... not a problem at all!!! Brilliant service nice atmosphere. Will visit again and may bring the dog and walk in the gardens. Very dog friendly!

Light airy place with an amazing log fire. Wonderfully dog friendly, genuinely like dogs which makes such a pleasant change. Had a very pleasant roast lunch and desert. Portions were sensible so you could enjoy both without feeling over stuffed and also no wasted food. Sweet staff and very reasonable.
