The Rockfish in South Hams

We really enjoyed our food which was very fresh and nicely presented. The Rockfish fillet was delicious. We were seated quickly but waited a long time to be offered drinks which was frustrating as our waitress was just chatting to the host at the door. When she finally came to take our order she was very friendly and helpful. Our waitress finished her shift and after that we were forgotten about despite sitting in front of the bar. We were not offered sweets or coffees and had to try to get someone's attention to pay the bill. If we came again we would ask to be seated upstairs or to the back of the restaurant as on a cold evening the wind blows all through the front seating area. There is a nice table in the front window which appears sheltered from draughts.

Oh My Goodness, what a place. The best fresh fish restaurant we have ever been to. Booking advised. Staff are brilliant. There are no words to describe the meal we had. You MUST visit, I am sure you will be equally amazed.

Fantastic food, caught fresh that day . The Red Mullet with Romesco was delicious. Service was brilliant too. Friendly efficient welcoming staff with a great sense of humour.

We have had numerous take away fish & chips from the shop near the lower ferry in Dartmouth. The food is fresh and the staff friendly. Yesterday evening we decided to see if we could get a table for 2 in the restaurant. Since it was a Thursday evening at 6.30pm, we thought that we might be lucky. The restaurant was very quiet with 4 or 5 tables in use. We waited by the door to speak to the waitress who was serving the table in the window. We were not acknowledged, even though she had to walk past us, to get the table condiments. We finally caught her eye, to be told that they were not accepting walk ins. Really??? Perhaps she didn't want to put in any effort, or the manager was away. Whatever the reason, we won't be back. We will stick with the takeaway or their equally good competition The Wheelhouse.Update from Friday 18th March, after corresponding with Liv from Rockfish admin, we were invited back to give Rockfish restaurant another go. We are so pleased that we did, as the meal and staff were excellent. It seems that we originally caught them on a bad day with sickness / staffing issues. We will now definitely return, as we now know what we are missing. Thank you Liv and the Rockfish staff, for a lovely meal.

We are friends with Mitch Tonks & went to the opening of his first ever "Rockfish" in Bristol.Irrespective of which outlet you visit, the quality & cooking of tasty food can always be guaranteed.We went to the Dartmouth restaurant & ate in but there is also a separate take-away around the corner.We had anchoiade with crusty bread & battered king prawns with Thai dip to start. Then cod, chips & curried mushy peas and turbot on the bone in Bearnaise sauce.There is a 2 course lunch meal deal - choice of 3 mains & 3 puds plus still / sparkling water for £20 each.NB with any main you have the option of unlimited chips but we were too full to take advantage of this.A special mention needs to be given to Joanie - a lovely, attentive waitress who is a real asset to the place. She is so friendly, welcoming & cares for the customers. We had an amazing wedding reception at Mitch's "The Seahorse" restaurant in 2016 & we told her today, that the only thing missing from it was her. She humbly accepted the compliment but I hope this review is reported back to her directly.

We had great food in a restaurant which was buzzing with atmosphere. Fantastic range of fish. Imaginative menu. Loved it and can't praise it and staff enough.

The best seafood I've eaten in recent memory! We stumbled across Rockfish and managed to get a table for late lunch - it was well worth the wait. We sat near the front of the restaurant and the front door was kept open for ventilation.The fish and seafood is fresh as promised, the portions are great. Complimentary chips, as well as free sparkling and still water, is a lovely touch. We had the crab salad, half pint of prawns, fried scallops and lemon sole. Salad which came with it was also very fresh. All were absolutely delicious.Special mention to Joanie for her excellent service! We'll be back.

Amazing concept, fresh fish and chips, executed very poorly. The upset began when being turned away for lunch due to being ‘fully booked’. We decided to wait for 3 o’clock (told this would be the earliest slot despite it only being 12:45) as had heard the food was amazing, to walk past at around 2:15 to find the restaurant half empty and the people who had been in the initial queue behind us sitting down eating their meal!! Very upsetting as we felt like we had purposely been told a later time that they would be able to fit us in for as we didn’t fit the usually look of the restaurant (we had every intention of spending money and having a large meal despite being younger than the average customer) in hopes of us dining elsewhere. Seems very odd that all other walk ins (some larger groups) had been offered tables!! We went for the calamari, halloumi, cod, and Dover sole. The starters were lovely, Dover sole alright despite it having a large hair in (picture attached), but cod very oily with dry chips, vinegary ketchup and watery tartar sauce. Not impressed whatsoever! Although we did receive a £28 refund for the price of the Dover Sole, this did not compensate the nasty experience. Very disappointed as expected far better. Did not bother staying for dessert.

Some of the best fish and chips I've ever had. The atmosphere was fantastic with the staff being very attentive and friendly.Jeannie 'alright lovely' was our host and was amazing. 5star service.The curry mushy peas were excellent and the unlimited chips was a bonus.They own brew larger was and the complimentary sparkling water was very refreshing.Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Had an unexpectedly great meal at Rockfish last night. What do you get if you combine the freshest fish and seafood with deep fat frying techniques...you get Rockfish and the experience is excellent. My wife started with the “Half Pint of Norwegian Prawns”, which she loved, and I had the tempura prawns, which were as good as tempura gets outside Japan...so pretty damn good. I followed that with fresh Brill, served in all its buttery glory, and my wife had the turbot....these dishes were winners as the fish was so fantastically fresh...probably just out of the sea that day and the preparation let the freshness shine through. There is nothing quite like fresh fish prepared simply. We got a side order of mushy peas with curry sauce too - these were fantastic but completely unnecessary...even if you don’t like mushy peas though, the addition of the curry sauce makes them absolutely delicious. The onion rings are worth mentioning also - pickled onions deep fried in the most delicious batter...this is a combination that I have never seen elsewhere and we pretty much inhaled them. If there is one thing I recommend here, it is the onion rings.Overall, this is a restaurant that buys the very freshest ingredient and then prepares them in a way that lets the flavours shine. To call it fish and chips seems, in a way, like a mild insult...but it really is fabulous fish & chips and Rockfish are clearly very proud of it, as they should be. We enjoyed our meal tonight more than we did the Michelin-recommended restaurant just down the street, where we ate the night before for 3 times the price. That speaks volumes.
