Stayed at the Hotel for a week, staff are fantastic, breakfast was decent enough, the restaurant is closed of a evening, but staff very helpful in arranging delivery, Rooms are very tired and can be a long walk from reception,Unfortunately we had to cancel our two month booking due to the fact our rooms wasn't cleaned for the whole week ,wet towels left on the floor, no coffee or tea refills, no toiletriesleft, and bin left overflowing,We did complain two both the evening manager and daytime manager but unfortunately this proved in vain ,Would I stay there again?,,,,,,,,,,unfortunately not

The hotel has an excellent car park and good facilities however it was short on staff . Reception was the best part of the time we were there, unmanned. Breakfast was a disaster. The staff were very short handed and having to multitask. They did work hard and polite at all times suffering from management failure. We have stayed at many best Western hotels, this one was quite the worst service we have ever had.

Restaurant is closed which they don't tell you before you book your room.Breakfast was okay. Woman serving the hot food was miserable and acted as it she wanted to be anywhere but there and hated you're presence and the fact she had to server you food.Food pre-cooked and kept warmed until severed.Coffee was very weak, which was disappointing. The one plus, the woman who showed me to my seat was full of smiles, great first impression that went down a steep hill from that moment on.

Booked this place for one night as part of an onward journey. The room itself was clean and suited our needs for the evening. The sofa had been made up for our Son. The hotel itself is very tired. Nothing like you'd expect given the photographs online. The first thing I noticed when we went inside was the smell. Its not something I can pin point...like state old food. It lingers through the reception area and the lounge area, and eases off as you walk through the hotel. The bar was open at 4pm so we went down for a drink at around 4:30 to find the barman inside but the door locked. After gaining entry we ordered drinks. Again there was this strange smell. We found out they don't do evening meals any longer but you can order via deliveroo and get a discount...we did this and ate in the bar..but there was no discount. The barman was new that evening and service was VERY stilted. Persobally if there is a new member of staff I find it unporfessional to leave them on their own from the very begining of their first shift. After a few drinks(some of which were right, some weren't) we left for our room.Braakfast we were totally shocked. In the mist of a pandemic the hotel were allowing a serve yourself breakfast of continental options, plus a "cooked breakfast" option. A family stood around the food, touching things, picking them up with their bare hands then putting them back and not one member of staff either stopped them or took the food away which they had touched(and there is no hand gels on offer) This was particularly horrify to witness when the evening before we had overhead the female adult telling someone that a member of their party was showing symptoms of the virus!! We opted for a hot breakfast but this was an error on my part. The cheapest beans I have ever tasted or see, three small, cheap, tasteless sausages (I opted for sausages beans and toast) and all of it was left it was such poor quality. I ended up eating a chocolate bar from the services. People who say their food is 'second to none' clearly have very low standards. When we left we accidentally left our Son's new hat in the room..reception were kind enough to ring and tell us,and ask if we could come collect it,but when I explained we wouldn't be going into the city again as we weren't local, she offered to post it back to us...unfortunately 11 days after our visit, the hat has not come through the post. Such a shame...maybe if they could not do this they should not make the offer?Certain won't be visiting again if we are in the city.

Very tired hotel. Must have been lovely in it's time. Stayed 3 nights. Slept 1 night the other 2 nights I was kept awake due to the thin wall adjoining the neighbouring bedroom. Sneezing, continuous coughing, conversations etc.. I am pleased to be home so I can sleep. I am aware that we are in a pandemic but food options for breakfast was very poor. Went elsewhere for dinner.

Really enjoyed our stay here. Superb hospitality, excellent room, spotlessly clean. Food second to none. Will certainly be returning soon. The history surrounding this hotel is amazing.

Historically, because I haven’t been a guest, it is of importance because of Tolkien, the writer from “Hobbit”, “Lord of the rings”. He spent the night on June 3rd 1916 at this Inn with his wife Edith, whom he had married some months earlier. He was previously informed the day before that he was to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, but was given 48 hours before he had to depart for Folkestone on June 5th.It is of relevance that it is just a block away from his old house at St and the Catholic Oratory, St. Felipe Neri, founded by Cardinal Newman, where he practiced his faith. The inn was built in 1704 (and still preserves ancient brickwork in some of the stables) and it was named as such because of the meadows and ploughing field that surrounded it (not like nowadays).Cardinal Newman used to arrange luncheons for guests visiting the oratory. But still more, it became a social meeting place where cultural meetings where heald.
