Nice surroundings, limited menu , (some items unavailable), have had better menus offered here. Had it not been for the fabulous staff the evening would have been more disappointing. No complaints about the food served, fresh; nicely cooked and well presented.

Dropped in for lunch on the spur of the moment. Welcome was warm and genuine. Drinks came promptly. Food was spot on. And their coffee was exceptional. Smarties! What a lovely surprise.

Best Sunday roast I’ve had in ages. I ordered the lamb and my partner had the farmyard feast. Service was so nice and accommodating even when I cheekily asked for some crackling with my lamb roast. Lovely warm and welcoming vibe with a lovely roaring fire to warm up on a cold rainy day. Would defiantly recommend and can’t wait to return

Great food, lovely place in a nice location. My only criticism would be that the service was too attentive, to the point we felt rushed. We were hoping for a leisurely Sunday lunch but we were in and out in under an hour.

We enjoyed a family lunch here for 7. There was a variety of menu selections across our party, including a vegetarian dish, and everyone's meal was lovely across all 3 courses. Would highly recommend.

Overpriced Sunday roast (£17), had to send it back as it was lukewarm & veg was boiled to death. Took ages to be served drinks, too. Before Covid we were regulars - the food was outstanding back then. No more. Shame. Music loud (used to be chilled jazz pre-Covid,). Ah well, win some, lose some and all that... And sadly they've lost a couple of regular customers because we won't be returning. And please don't leave a "we promise to do better" comment as left for other poor reviews below.

POOR QUALITYWe went to this pub restaurant just before Christmas we were a party of six and were meeting some of the party for the first time. i ordered the Shallot mussels and Roast Beef. The Mussels were probably the worst mussels I have ever had, there were an ample quantity of shells however very few mussels in them and certainly the 6 I managed to catch floating in the bottom of very watery liquid were extremely small. My wifes lamb was very dry and a miniscule amount of gravy, my vegetables were also cold. On top of that I didn't even have time for a coffee as we were told that they needed the table so we didn't really get to know the people we had arranged to meet. All in all the afternoon lunch was very disappointing, clearly the meals had been booked far to close together as we had not finished our meal when we were told we had to leave. I will definitely not be going again. I cannot say the same about the castle inn their other restaurant where we have always had good food and service.

Visited this very lovely looking place as a spur of the moment trip to North Yorkshire. Did not enjoy the experience inside at all. Felt like we were planted in a walkway, capacity over ambience was evident and it seemed like people were being stuck on tables which were not suitable for eating on. 4 onto table designed for two. Felt really anxious. Too many tables stole away the ambience but was only in relation to the bar area as we did not get placed in the restaurant area which further compounded my comments above. The bar area had totally too many tables which made us leave and not eat.

Really nice setting at the Square and Compass. We got a lovely table. Staff were really nice and the food was really good. Would recommend for a Sunday roast.

A very nice pub. The building is old but the decor looks new and it is spacious and airy inside. We were shown to our table and a drinks order taken immediately. That’s my pet hate being dropped at a table and no one takes a drinks order. The food was excellent and the service great. Slightly out of Harrogate +- 10 mins. But certainly highly recommended
