The Gatehouse at Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds

Cafe was freezing because they had a door to outside propped open in -2oC weather (shortly before the snowstorm started,) received the wrong food despite a party member stating she had serious food allergies, and we couldn't return the food that was wrong because the waiter disappeared for 10 minutes straight after serving us. Luckily the sandwich brought was another kind I liked so I just ate it anyway, it was okay. Could've been worse but wouldn't eat here again.

Very disappointed. I’ve been to other cafes within Leeds city council buildings and they’ve been lovely. This place was dire. They only offer sandwiches and baked potatoes. The door was propped open (late October) so it was freezing cold and windy inside. It took 30 minutes to place our order and then the food was another 20 minutes. This place is really poorly run and nowhere near as lovely as the cafe at the art gallery. The poor young staff were rushed off their feet the entire time. There was no sign of any sort of supervisor or manager to help them out and ensure things ran smoothly. The saddest part is that scores and scores of people came in and saw the queue and left, or abandoned queuing. Many of them were going to the local Costa instead which is a crying shame.

The fruit scone was dry and looked like it came from a Morrison’s packet but was £2.50, the sausage roll was one of those skinny things you get from frozen £3 and the panini was not a panini at all but the puniest baguette I have ever seen and too stiff to chew at the ends £5. The coffee machine looked proper but he got the chocolate part from another one of those instant machines and he asked if I wanted sugar even after I reminded him it was a mocha. The queue, although not long, took so long my wife called to check if I was ok/alive. I like to support local but this is why I keep going back to Costa or Nero. The food and price here where both hard to swallow ;(

Danny Joanne and Jill are fabulous. Make you feel very welcome and the service is excellent and the food is really really nice. They cater for both adults and children with plenty of seating .

I had the misfortune to visit today. The 1st time we went in was fine. However, we went back to the cafe again at around 3.45pm where they locked the doors at 3.45pm instead of the 4pm that was advertised.We were the only people in there so not busy at all. We took our drinks and food outside on the picnic benches when my 6 year old grandson needed to use the toilet. I went back in and asked if my grandson could use the toilet whereby I was told that no he couldn’t use it because they shut at 4pm. It was probably around 4.05pm that I asked. It was the same people that had served us at the counter so they knew we had purchased drinks. It was a ridiculous decision not to let a child use the toilet and I certainly won’t be going back again.

Nice enough staff but ripped off. I had a panini with chargrilled veg and mozerella which was £3.95. Also on the menu was saugage roll with beans priced at £3.95 but my husband didnt want beans but 2 sausge rolls instead the sausage rolls were only small (smaller than you would get at Greggs) and i had a tea and my husband a coffee it came to £16.45. I thought that seemed a bit expensive. So when i questioned it i had beed charged for 2x sausage roll and beans which was £7.90 even though he didnt get the beans!! What a rip off Avoid this place!

Enjoyed a nice coffee and cake whilst looking out over Kirkstall Abbey. Prices a little high for food but drinks are reasonable. Outside seating is nice

not cheap but still cheaper than starbucks. LOVELY atmosphere, friendly staff, gorgeous gardens out back.

On my third visit to Leeds this year, I was informed about The Gate House Cafe close to the Kirkstall Abbey.The quaint building with a lovely outdoor space most suitable for the warmer climate .The indoor space especially the toilets were very clean. Some lovely photos surrounded the walls, detailing the history of the Abbey..The staff were friendly with a smile..The food and cakes looked lovely, I only tried the fruit and carrot cake, I would say it's tasted better than cakes I've purchased from Harrods at a third of the price. The Hot chocolate was very hot, just as the description says... It's a must visit for families and friends, friendly atmosphere..Thank you to the manager who I met on entering the cafe..I will definitely be returning...

Lovely setting. Cafe style ordering at cash desk. Wooden paddle given and you seat yourself. Limited out door seating and cheap table and chairs outside. Table and chairs inside fitting for the style of the building. Only waiter service is when they bring your food to the table. Basic menu, no balsamic vinegar. Paper napkins. Food very average. Food highly overpriced. £20 for 2 jacket potatoes and 2 glasses of wine. Children friendly but not disabled friendly
