Organizational disaster and mediocre food with only 3 of 20 tables occupied.Arrived at 11.55 for a 12.00 booking for 3 adults and 2 children.Seated at table with menus by 12.00, ordered drinks which arrived at 12.15. Food order taken for 1 burger meal, 1 gammon meal, 1 gyros meal and 2 children's chicken nugget meals. After chasing order at 12.45 it arrived between 12.55 and 13.12 There were 6 tables occupied by now. The first meal to arrive was the gyros, 5 mins later the burger arrived, 5 mins later the chicken nugget meals and finally the gammon meal.Quality of dishes.Gyros chicken was dry.Burger was bland and lacked seasonings, the bun was stale. The children's meals were served with chunky hand cut chips that were too hot to hold let alone eat.The gammon was made up of 3 pieces ? and the fried egg was swimming in cooking oil.If we had not been with the children the whole meal would have been sent back.Final comments.None of us ate all of our meals. The staff seemed to lack any sense of urgency or care in customer service. It felt to me as if being a customer was an inconvenience to the staff.

WORST meal out in a long time. We were staying at nearby Griffon Lodges and thought it’d be a nice place for our final meal of the trip.We reserved a table, but were seated at a table with three chairs even though we are a couple. We were asked our drinks orders before we could even look through the menu, when we asked for some water and more time this seemed to annoy the waiter. Another waiter came to take our food order, they were much nicer. We shared the ham hock terrine which was okay, focaccia bit skimpy. I got the special swordfish steak and partner got fillet steak. The mains took a while and when mine arrived I couldn’t believe what I was served. The potatoes were black, the spice on them burnt beyond recognition. No one would pick up that plate and think it was edible?! (I’m laughing now looking at the picture) Confused I took a bite and it was 100% burnt. Had to send it back. 5 minutes later another waiter came over and said that was the last of the special potatoes (so they had given me the burnt dregs, lovely!) and I could have chips instead. I appreciated they were apologetic but my replacement meal took so long my partner’s went cold before it arrived. When the fresh one arrived I couldn’t eat much because the “salsa verde” the fish and chips were sat on was just green oil. The flavour of everything was just oil… With an array of unseasoned tomatoes. It was the most unpleasant meal I’ve been served in a long time. My partners steak however was lovely. We decided to leave without ordering dessert and waited and waited but our plates weren’t cleared. Partner had to pay at the bar and said staff were just counting tips. The bathroom hand drier was the best part of my experience. I am giving 2 stars because I wasn’t charged for the swordfish and staff were apologetic but what a poor experience. Highly doubt we’d return.

We have visited Tykes a number of times now, the earliest being over 15yrs ago, but returned after a longer than usual period earlier this month (Feb 2022). I'm pleased to say we were not disappointed on our latest visit, the standard of food here is second to none, it really is that good, and the price is extremely reasonable too - in fact some dishes are around pub prices, but the quality is noticeably superior. On our last visit we went for Sunday lunch and had the roast beef option, it was proper beef from a roasting joint, cooked lovely, not some pre sliced mass purchased effort. The roast potatoes and veg had that home cooked feel, definitely not frozen and the accompanying veg was seasonal too. And it was priced cheaper than a pub local to home - unsure what pubs near Tykes charge. Yes, some of the wines are more expensive (but very nice) and yes, some items on the menu do seem a bit pricey, but honestly, if our previous visits and the recent roast dinner are anything to go by, it'd be worth it still. The service was as attentive as ever, not too much, not too little and the overall standards are high, the place is spotlessly clean, has ample parking and is a little gem just outside of York, am so glad we found this restaurant and will definitely be returning again, just hopefully sooner next time.

Excellent food and great service from all the staff. We had posh fishfinger sandwiches. They were first class. Fantastic vistas and loads of atmosphere. A must for anyone travelling on the A64 to Scarborough , or anyone looking for a great lunch.

Service was ok but we waited all week for this meal a final meal before setting off home. I ordered a mix grill thinking I was going to get great produce ,but got weatherspoons standard. Gammon was like bacon.

Always fantastic! 12 years since getting married here- never had a bad meal. Our kids loved it too. Staff lovely and attentive still.
