Met a couple who told us about this pub and can''t believe that in all our visits to York we have never found it before. It's not far off the beaten track and full of people who obviously love the place. It has a couple of spacious rooms and outside space too. The bar billiard table is free, but a contribution to the upkeep can be made at the bar. Beers were well kept and a good selection too. It's a gem so seek it out. We sought it out again (28/3/22) and it's still great.

Nice pub. I believe it's community owned, after saving it from closure. Quite a bit on the 'PTA brigade' spectrum, but wouldn't put me.off.going in again. Would look at trying the bar snacks next time, decent size pork pies and scotch eggs, doesn't need to be anything too fancy to go with beer.

Good beer, reasonable atmosphere, though sometimes very noisy. Spoilt by emphasis on mask wearing for the five second walk from entrance to table!

Brilliant pub , lots of differing beers , fabulous decor and atmosphere . Top class community owned local boozer 👍👍

A supreme example of a community pub. A good range of beers, all in perfect nick, alongside a healthy selection of gins, tasty scotch as well as wines and cider. HOT MULLED WINE on a cold winter's day, plus (fake but great) coal fires. Pork pies will keep you happy, veggie options availableLaid out like a proper pub, with a snug, side room, bar room and an exquisitely upholstered back room, the Golden Ball is a real gem. Local art finds itself a space here as does regular live musicThe beer garden is quite charming. My favourite pub in York and many other people's too I'd imagine!

Excellent local traditional pub. Great atmosphere and beer with a vibrant community and range of events

A really good choice of Yorkshire brewed beers. We had the Ainsty Assassin, a really nice Oatmeal Stout and Brass Castle Brewery’s Northern Blonde which went down very smoothly. Unpretentious place. Less than 10 minutes walk from the city centre bridges over the Ouze.

Ace community owned pub, serving local beer and nice atmosphere. It's not a food place (but they do usual crisps etc and pork pie type things), and there's sometimes events on like music nights and things, but I've always felt very welcome here.

Very excellent pub. Consistently fine beer, helpful, friendly bar staff, cosy snugs, good beer garden, regular mini art exhibitions on the walls. If this is what you like in a pub, there can't be many better.

Good community-owned local pub. Not that inviting from the outside but it was on our walk and had good reviews so we stopped in. They had a few interesting beers on and the outdoor area was pleasant on a nice Friday evening.
